Preparation
- Rinse the basmati rice in a fine-mesh strainer under cold running water until the water runs clear.
- In a medium pot, heat the olive oil or ghee over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes, or until golden and fragrant.
- Stir in the salt, ground cumin, coriander, cardamom, and cinnamon. Let them toast with the onions for 1-2 minutes.
Cooking
- Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir to coat each grain with the oil and spices.
- Pour in 4 cups of water and add saffron if using, then bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
Serving
- After 15 minutes, remove the pot from heat but keep it covered for another 5-10 minutes.
- Fluff the rice gently with a fork and garnish with fresh herbs before serving.
Notes
For added richness, you can incorporate a tablespoon of butter or a sprinkle of toasted nuts just before serving. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
