Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast Using instant yeast speeds up the dough rising process.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil For greasing the pan as well as in the dough.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Pizza Sauce Ingredients
  • 14 oz canned peeled tomatoes Provides a convenient and flavorful base for the sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano Plus more for topping.
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • Fresh basil leaves For garnish Add just before serving.
  • Olive oil For drizzling
Topping
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded Feel free to substitute with other cheeses based on preference.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water, instant yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until slightly frothy.
  2. Add the olive oil, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and let the dough rise at room temperature for 1 hour.
Sauce Preparation
  1. While the dough rises, prepare the pizza sauce. In a saucepan over low heat, cook the canned peeled tomatoes. Use the back of a spoon to break them up, adding salt, pepper, and dried oregano. Simmer for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat and stir in fresh basil. Allow the sauce to cool.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 480°F (250°C). If using a pizza stone, preheat it as well.
  2. Grease your baking pan with olive oil. Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and stretch it gently into a rectangle to fit the pan.
  3. Spread a generous layer of the sauce on top of the dough. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce and add extra oregano if desired.
  4. Bake the pizza for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden.
  5. Once out of the oven, drizzle lightly with olive oil and top with fresh basil leaves before serving.

Notes

For an extra chewy crust, let the dough rise in the refrigerator overnight. Ensure your baking pan is well-greased to avoid sticking.
