Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 liter 1 liter (4 cups) milk Whole milk is recommended for a rich texture.
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon (5 g) vanilla sugar Can be substituted with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • 1 Grated zest of 1 orange Infuses a refreshing taste.
  • 6 large 6 large egg yolks
  • 125 g 125 g (¾ cup) sugar
  • 1.5 tablespoons 1.5 tablespoons (15 g) cornstarch
  • 100-150 g Favorite cookies (e.g., ladyfingers or biscotti) Choose cookies that complement citrus flavors.
  • Cocoa powder, ground cinnamon, or chocolate shavings for garnish

Method

Preparation and Cooking
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, vanilla sugar, and orange zest. Stir occasionally until the mixture just begins to boil.
  2. While the milk heats, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a separate bowl until well combined and slightly lightened in color.
  3. Mix the cornstarch with a splash of warm milk from the saucepan to create a slurry, then add this back into the egg mixture, whisking until smooth.
  4. Once the milk is boiling, gradually pour the egg mixture into the saucepan, stirring constantly to prevent curdling.
  5. Continue cooking for about 2-3 minutes, or until the mixture thickens to a custard-like consistency. Remove from heat.
  6. Gently fold in your choice of crushed cookies until evenly distributed.
  7. Pour the mixture into serving bowls or dessert cups. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  8. Before serving, garnish with cocoa powder, cinnamon, or chocolate shavings for an extra touch.
