Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Using unsalted butter is crucial for controlling the saltiness.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar For a less sweet version, reduce the sugar.
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute half with whole wheat for a healthier option.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Can substitute with baking powder, but double the amount.
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or chopped nuts (optional) For a festive twist, add holiday spices like cinnamon or nutmeg.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. If you’re adding chocolate chips or nuts, fold them in gently at this point.
  6. Use a cookie scoop or spoon to drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden but the centers are still soft.
  2. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Make sure your butter is at room temperature for a smoother dough. Don’t overmix the dough after adding the flour to keep the cookies tender. Store cookies in an airtight container with a slice of bread to maintain softness.
