Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 lb 450 g ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder optional, for heat

Toast & Topping

  • 8 slices thick-cut Texas toast
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar or Colby-Jack cheese
  • Fresh parsley optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper and cook for about 3 minutes until softened.
  • Add the ground beef and cook until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess grease if needed.
  • Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Add ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, paprika, salt, pepper, and chili powder. Stir well and simmer for 8–10 minutes until thick and saucy.
  • While the meat simmers, toast the Texas toast in the oven or toaster until golden.
  • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously over each slice of toast.
  • Sprinkle cheese on top and place under the broiler for 1–2 minutes until melted and bubbly.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve hot.
