Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450g ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 small head green cabbage about 2 lbs / 900g, chopped
  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 1 15 oz / 425g can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 15 oz / 425g can tomato sauce
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp salt adjust to taste
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar optional, balances acidity

Instructions

  • Brown the Meat
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onion until the meat is no longer pink.
  • Drain excess grease.
  • Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Layer in the Slow Cooker
  • Add chopped cabbage to the bottom of the crock pot.
  • Sprinkle uncooked rice evenly over the cabbage.
  • Add the cooked beef mixture on top.
  • Add the Sauce
  • In a bowl, mix together:
  • diced tomatoes
  • tomato sauce
  • beef broth
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • paprika, oregano, thyme
  • salt, pepper, and brown sugar
  • Pour mixture evenly over everything in the slow cooker.
  • Cook
  • Cover and cook:

  • or HIGH for 4–5 hours
