2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
For the Vanilla Sauce:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Spread bread cubes evenly into the prepared baking dish. Add raisins if using.
3. In a large mixing bowl whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
5. Press bread gently into the liquid and allow to soak for 15 minutes.
6. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown and set in the center.
7. While the pudding bakes, prepare the vanilla sauce by combining butter, sugar, and heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat.
8. Cook until smooth and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
9. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
10. Allow bread pudding to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
11. Drizzle warm vanilla sauce generously over each serving and enjoy.
Notes
Day-old bread works best because it absorbs the custard without becoming mushy.
Brioche, challah, French bread, or Italian bread are excellent choices.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
The vanilla sauce can be refrigerated separately and reheated before serving.
For extra flavor add chopped pecans, walnuts, or dried cranberries.
