Mince and Tatties

Ingredients

For the Mince (Beef Gravy)

  • 1 lb 450 g ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium carrot finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or ½ tsp dried
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Tatties (Mashed Potatoes)

  • 2 lb 900 g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • Cook the Potatoes
  • Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted water.
  • Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, until tender.
  • Drain well.
  • Make the Mash
  • Mash the potatoes with butter and milk.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cover and keep warm.
  • Cook the Mince
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add onion and carrot and cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Brown the Beef
  • Add ground beef to the pan.
  • Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  • Build the Gravy
  • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and beef broth.
  • Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Simmer
  • Let the mixture cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thicke
