Cabbage rolls stuffed with meat, rice, and vegetables, topped with homemade tomato sauce. A comforting and easy classic.
Ingredients
- 8Â large cabbage leaves
- 300g of minced beef or chicken
- 1/2Â cup of cooked rice
- 1Â grated carrot
- 1/4Â cup chopped onion
- 1Â clove of chopped garlic
- 2Â tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley
- 1Â egg (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1Â cup of tomato puree
- 1Â tablespoon of olive oil
- 1/4Â cup chopped onion (for the sauce)
- 1Â clove of chopped garlic (for the sauce)
- Oregano to taste
Instructions
- Blanch the cabbage leaves in salted water for 3-4 minutes. Cool and dry.
- Mix the meat, rice, carrot, onion, garlic, parsley, salt, pepper and egg in a bowl.
- Place filling on each sheet, roll up and fold the edges inwards.
- For the sauce, sauté the onion and garlic, add the tomato puree and seasonings. Cook for 10 minutes.
- Place the rolls in a dish. Cover with the sauce and cook covered for 40 minutes in the oven or a frying pan.
- Serve hot, accompanied by bread or fresh salad.
Notes
- Use savoy cabbage if you want more manageable leaves.
- You can freeze the rolls before cooking them.
- Vegetarian option: substitute cooked lentils for meat.
