Scalloped Potatoes

A homemade recipe for oven-baked gratin potatoes with creamy layers of potato, cream and melted cheeses, perfect as a side dish or main course.


Ingredients

  • 1 kg of potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 2 cups of cooking cream
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup grated cheese (emmental, gruyère or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of butter to grease the dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Place a layer of potatoes at the bottom of the dish, overlapping slightly.
  4. Sprinkle chopped garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg over the potatoes. Add some grated cheese.
  5. Repeat the process in layers until all the potatoes are used up.
  6. In a bowl, mix the milk with the cream. Pour over the potatoes until completely covered.
  7. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use high starch potatoes such as Monalisa or Yukon Gold.
  • For a more intense flavor, add caramelized onion between layers.
  • You can prepare the recipe in advance and bake it before serving.
